The Goliards

About Us
The Goliards play a variety of historic and reproduction instruments, and sing in a variety of languages.

The Goliards (L to R):  Cuffy Sullivan/vocalist, Anne Durant/Harp, Jonathan Brazell/recorder, Anne Acker/Sinfonye, Ashley Adams/vocalist, John Hillenbrand/Vielle.

John HillenbrandFiddler - and founder - John Hillenbrand studied medieval music and medieval bowed strings with Emily Stevenson in Atlanta, and Margriet Tindemans in Seattle and Spain, as well as with numerous other Early Music luminaries.  He performed with the Emory Early Music Consort in Atlanta for several years before founding The Goliards, then known as The Garlandia Ensemble, in 1998.  John directed sixteen medieval music productions with his ensemble in Atlanta, and since moving to Savannah has led four performances with the current incarnation of The Goliards.  He took up the violin (both modern and baroque) when he moved to Savannah, and is a member of the Irish trio, A Murder of Crows.

Anne DurantHarpist Anne Durant is a native Savannahian who has played the highland bagpipes and the piano from childhood.  She studied Scottish/Irish harp (clarsach) with Nancy Blick Clark in Cincinnati, Ohio.   President of the Coastal Folk Harp Society, she teaches Scottish Harp in Savannah.  Her students are consistent prize winners in Scottish Harp Society-sponsored competitions throughout the Southeast.

Anne was formerly a member of the (now defunct) Savannah Celtic Pipe Band, and of the Atlanta Pipe Band. She is active as a solo performer at weddings and other occasions, is a founding member of The Goliards in their Savannah incarnation, and also directs and performs with the Irish trio, A Murder of Crows.

Cuffy SullivanVocalist Cuffy Sullivan is the founder and former managing director of Ensemble Con Spirito, which was a womens' sacred music ensemble in Savannah.  She is also co-founder and executive director of the Savannah Children's Choir.  Raised by a musical family in a musical town, her vibrato-less voice limited her repertoire choices, but in early music, she's now found the right music to sing!
