To open their seventeenth season (the ninth in Savannah), the Goliards will perform a recital of songs from the Renaissance on Sunday, November 1, at 3:00 P.M. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church (34th and Abercorn). Other than the fact that all of the music comes from the period of approximately 1450-1550, the program is themeless. The songs were chosen simply for their melodic beauty, and no attempt has been made to organize the program by geography or subject matter. This having been said, most popular music and poetry is about love, and the contents of this concert are no exception.

Sopranos Katherine Broberg and Mary Catherine Mousourakis  will perform two frottole by Bartolomeo Tromboncino (ca. 1470-1535), a setting to music by Pierre Regnault (ca. 1490-after 1561, known as Sandrin), of a poem by King Francis I of France (1494-1547, reigned from 1515), a setting by Jehan Chardavoine (1537-1585) of Pierre de Ronsard's (1524-1585) Ode à Cassandre, an anonymous French popular song (mid-16th century), two anonymous German songs (mid-15th century) and three anonymous English songs of the 15th century.

One of these songs, Westron wynde (Western Wind) survives only as the cantus firmus of Masses by Christopher Tye, John Taverner and John Sheppard. This melody was extracted and reconstructed by Peter Phillips (founder/director of the Tallis Scholars) and orchestrated by the Goliard's John Hillenbrand for a (very brief) world premier.

The singers will be accompanied by Anne Durant (harp) and John Hillenbrand (Renaissance fiddle). Contemporaneous instrumental works (from Tuscany, Burgundy, The Low Countries and Iberia) will be interspersed throughout the program with the addition of Katherine Broberg on Renaissance straight-bore recorder.
